Researchers at the Heinz Nixdorf Institute and the Institute for Photonic Quantum Systems (PhoQS) have succeeded in realizing a lidar measurement system that can mathematically prove that it can resolve distances down to quantum noise. By using a so-called quantum pulse gate, the researchers succeeded in developing a system that could undercut the classical limits, such as the Rayleigh distance resolution limit and the Cramér Rao limit.
